Carl Linnaeas
The Father of taxonomy
Born: May 23, 1707
Died: January 10, 1778
Carl Linnaeas was born in Sweden in May 1707. He began his career studying as a botanist and was very interested in the science of plants. Later in his life he got a degree in medicine and studied at various colleges to become a porfessor. He visited areas of Sweden to do research and he gathered a group of students to travel on voyages and gather samples of animals and plants. At this time in history, there was no formal way of classifying or naming organisms. Linnaeas was the first to look at the physical traits of species and sort them into groups. In 1735 he published Systema Naturae, an explanation about his system of identifying species. His system of arranging species into groups is called the Linnaean Hierarchy and his way of naming organisms is called binomial nomenclature. Carl Linnaeas classified more than 11,000 species and paved the way for many future scientists.
